If you could change just one thing

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

At first this seems like a very simple question.  But if you’re like me, before long you’re going to be beating yourself up because there are SO MANY things you want to change!

It’s always a lot easier to think negatively – about ourselves, our lives, or our situations.

But let’s tackle this question positively and with the purpose of changing just one thing, without letting negativity taking over everything.

Let’s get started!

Grab a sheet of paper and make a quick list of the things you really do want to change about yourself. 

These have to be things you can actually and realistically change, okay? 

The key here is to be quick and do not dwell on the negative aspects of what you perceive to be faults as you make this list.

Once you get a small handful, STOP! 

Don’t keep going.  We’re not going to beat ourselves up here.  We just need something to work with.

Here are some things on my list:

  • Be more active
  • Be in better shape
  • Develop a deeper social life
  • Be more outgoing

Something to note are the words you use.  In my list above, they’re all positive and focussed on the results I want, not the way I am now.  Don’t use negative language, such as “Be less lazy”, or “Not be so shy”.

Now back to your list.

Which one jumps out at you right off the bat?

Pick that one, and only that one.

Let the rest go for now.  Remember, this isn’t about beating yourself up, or trying to make too many changes all at once.  Let’s keep it simple and easy, and stress free.

Now make a list of the things you can do to create this change. 

Let’s use the example of me developing a deeper social life.

  • Pick two activities I really enjoy doing and look for groups who do them.  Join at least one and give it a fair chance.
  • Consistently schedule dinner dates with (best friends) each month.  Get creative and make them themed dinners, or try a different restaurant each month.  Note to self – DO NOT CANCEL!
  • Once a week, have coffee by myself at different cafes and say hello to people, strike up conversations every chance possible.  Note to self – DO NOT CANCEL THIS EITHER!!

Now I have a challenge for you! 

Try this out.  Pick one thing to change, keep it positive, and do your best to make it happen.

Have fun with it.  Bring in reinforcements if you need it.  Keep it simple and keep it easy.

But give it a go and see what you can do!  Every little step in the direction of where and who you want to be is a step in the right direction!

And many little steps will get you to your goal.
